ENT-302



Kingdom Animalia have 5 Phyla.
1.   Chordata: Vertebra: Birds, Mammals, Fish, Reptiles, Amphibians
2.   Arthropoda: Invertebrates in entomology subject.
3.   Mollusca: Snails, Shells
4.   Porifera: Sponges
5.   Protozoa: Plasmodium
Salient Characteristics of Phylum Arthropoda (Arthros=jointed, Poda=foot):
1.   Jointed-footed animals
2.   Paired jointed appendages.
3.   Body is made up of segments.
4.   They have hard exoskeleton made up of chitin. They shed their skins to increase in size.
5.   They grow in stages/bits.
6.   Have to shed skin time to time.
7.   Open circulatory system(blood flows freely in cavity called hemolymph).
8.   They have ventral nervous system in form of ganglion. (Ganglia is mass of nerve fibers).
9.   For the exchange of gases they have trachea, skin or book lungs.
10.                   Blood of Arthropods have no hemoglobin and gases transport activity.
11.                   Gut/Elementary canal is divided into i. Foregut ii. Midgut iii. Hindgut.
Major classes of Phylum Arthropoda:
1.   Insecta: Butterfly, Silk worm
2. Arachnida: Spiders, Sticks, Mites.
3. Crustacea                                     4. Chilopoda
5. Diplopoda
